55 Years old, Irishman, father of two grown up boys, have spent the last generation since 1990 consumed by the living reality of the politics of fatherhood, particularly afeter separation. This journey has become my career, which is also as an engineer and lecturer to engineering students, who are mostly young men. Having become the first Father in Irish Family Law to be granted Joint Equal Physical Custody of our two young Chiildren (2 and 3 yeasrs old) back in 1990, I founded www.ParentalEquality.ie in 1992 in order to promote shared parenting as a cultural norm. My vision was that even before erection (never mind conception, birth, marriage and separation/divorce that if the conceptsof shared responsibility, mutual parental respect, equal recognition and support were shared values between men and women then my belief was and in fact is even more so after almost 20 years, that community and family life would bemore sustainable, more caring, less stressed etc and that more families would stay tgether longterm, with the maturation of parents helping them to commit to the longterm journey of raising the only innocents in marriage breakdown, the children. Over a period of reflective practice, being personally in the midst of the mire, I have becoem so much more aware of the breadth of the issues and often sublte (and also pretty stark) drivers which operate in an Anti-Father mode, which also is of no lng term value to mothers. I have long realised that there is a constant process operating at official, sub-cultural, educational, professional, religious and idealogical levels to keep men and women fighting against each other rather than having them fighting with each other against the anti-family, anti-community materialism which is the current PC accepted norm.
